Shivamogga police arrested a 26-year-old man accused of murdering his grandmother while under the influence of ganja (marijuana). He was shot in the leg after he assaulted a policeman in a bid to avoid arrest.

The accused, Kishor, allegedly murdered his grandmother, Susheelamma, 65, at Milaghatta Anandarao Extension in Shivamogga on July 1. Kishor, who was addicted to ganja, attacked her after she admonished him over his habit, and threatened to inform the police. He allegedly killed her by hitting her on the head with a boulder.

Doddapete police registered a case against Kishor, and Shivamogga Superintendent of Police B. Nikhil formed two teams to trace him.

When a police team went to arrest him at Vajpayee Extension early on July 2, Kishor allegedly attacked Police Constable Ganesh with a knife and tried to flee. Doddapete Police Inspector Satyanarayana firing a warning shot in the air, but when the accused did not surrender, he shot him in the left leg, Mr. Nikhil informed the media.

The police shifted Kishor to McGann Hospital for treatment.
