Over the years, the APL has steadily grown in stature and popularity, emerging as a major platform for budding cricketers from Andhra Pradesh to showcase their talent. The league has played a significant role in nurturing several players who have gone on to make a mark at the national level and in the IPL. Among its notable success stories is Indian international cricketer Nitish Kumar Reddy. . Vijaya Tripurana, who made his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals this season, P Venkata Satyanarayana Raju of Mumbai Indians, and Pyla Avinash of Punjab Kings have progressed through the league, underlining the league’s growing importance as a pathway to higher levels of cricket.

With IPL franchises increasingly scouting talent from State-level T20 competitions, players participating in the APL are keen to make the most of the opportunity. As many as 553 cricketers registered for the Season 5 player auction, although only a select few earned contracts with the participating franchises.

Apart from being a talent incubator, the APL has also developed a reputation for its competitiveness. Since its inception in 2022, the tournament has produced four different champions, highlighting the balanced nature of the competition. Coastal Riders, Rayalaseema Kings, Vizag Warriors and Tungabhadra Warriors have lifted the trophy in previous editions, with Tungabhadra Warriors entering the current season as defending champions.

The league has continued to evolve in scale and structure. While earlier editions featured six franchises, the competition was expanded to seven teams from the 2025 season onwards, resulting in an increase in the number of matches. The APL also follows the Impact Player rule, providing an additional cricketer an opportunity to contribute in every match.

A highlight of Season 5 is its expansion into a multi-city tournament. Unlike last year, matches are being conducted across three venues: Visakhapatnam, Mangalagiri and Kadapa. The move is aimed at exposing players to varying pitch and playing conditions while simultaneously taking the game to cricket enthusiasts across different regions of Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking about the development, APL governing council chairman Sujaya Krishna Ranga Rao says the multi-city format was introduced with enhanced facilities and infrastructure to further promote cricketing talent across the State.

According to him, player accommodation and amenities have been significantly upgraded this season. Considerable investments have also been made to improve stadium infrastructure. The stadium in Kadapa can now host international matches, while the ACA Stadium in Mangalagiri underwent renovations worth ₹50 crore to meet modern standards.

Ranga Rao says the governing council plans to expand the tournament to additional venues in the coming years to ensure cricket reaches every corner of Andhra Pradesh.

“APL has become an important platform for rural athletes. The league’s success will help local players progress to national-level tournaments such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Indian Premier League. We hope to see more cricketers from Andhra Pradesh advancing to represent India in the future,” he says.

Entry for the matches is free.
