A police constable and a history-sheeter were arrested on charges of assaulting three persons and snatching a mobile phone from them at Anna Nagar in Vriddhachalam on Sunday (June 7, 2026).
According to the police, Ranjith, a constable attached to the Vriddhachalam police station in Cuddalore district, was assigned to security duty at a picket in Kottakuppam in the neighbouring Villupuram district on Saturday (June 6). But Ranjith failed to report for duty and was seen riding a two-wheeler with history-sheeter Subash, alias Subash Chandrabose, on Sunday.
The duo, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, intercepted three youngsters riding triples on a motorcycle near the Anna Nagar water tank. The duo accused the youth Dinesh Kumar, 19, Satyanarayanan, 18, and Jacob, 18, of Vriddhachalam of consuming ganja and began interrogating them. When the youth attempted to leave, the constable and the history-sheeter assaulted them with a lathi and snatched a mobile phone from them.
Based on a complaint, Cuddalore District Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar ordered an investigation. A case was registered against the duo under Sections 126 (2), 296 (b), 115 (2), 118 (1), 308, and 351 (3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act.
The duo was arrested and remanded in custody.
