More than a month after the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election, public anger against local party workers has not subsided. People across the State have found a new way to express their anger – throwing eggs at Trinamool leaders accused of corruption and wrongdoing.
On Saturday night (June 6, 2026), eggs were allegedly hurled at senior Trinamool leader MLA Madan Mitra’s convoy in the State’s Kamarhati constituency. The vehicle in which the MLA was travelling was peppered with eggs and a video showing it went viral.
But Mr. Mitra is not the only leader to have faced such as attack. On Sunday, people threw eggs at Trinamool councillor Bappaditya Dasgupta, arrested on serious charges including extortion, even as the police escorted him to the Alipore court amid tight security.
On Saturday (June 6), a large number of people from Bhangar had gathered outside the office of National Investigation Agency in Kolkata’s New Town area where Saokat Mollah, arrested Trinamool leader and former MLA, was kept before being produced in court. The people had kept ready crates of egg but could not target Mr. Molla as he was whisked out from a different gate.
The series of egg attacks started on May 30 when Trinamool general secretary Abhishek Banerjee faced an irate mob in Sonarpur near Kolkata where he gone to meet the family of a deceased party supporter. Locals threw eggs at Mr. Banerjee who had to wear a helmet for protection. Some eggs hit the helmet.
Reports indicate that the Trinamool had to cancel a meeting of its councillors scheduled for Sunday afternoon (June 7, 2026) at Trinamool Bhavan along Kolkata’s Eastern Metropolitan Bypass fearing ‘egg attacks’ on party councillors.
Unique places to hide
In another incident, a local Trinamool worker from Amta in Howrah district was found hiding under a pile of sarees during a police raid. Brahmananda Chakraborty, a resident of Udaynarayanpur, has been accused of involvement in the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal. Viral videos showed the man trying to hide under a pile of sarees with a police officer telling him to come out.
A few days ago, Trinamool leader Sahidul Mian was arrested from Mathabhanga in Cooch Behar district. He was found hiding under a cot at his home when angry villagers surrounded it. He has been accused of taking ‘cut money’ from villagers who benefitted from government schemes.
After the change of government in West Bengal, hundreds of Trinamool leaders have been arrested on charges of corruption, extortion and involvement in the post-poll violence in 2021.
