Doctors from Medstar Hospitals at Tadepalli have successfully treated a boy, hailing from Georgia in Europe, who was suffering from pulmonary atresia, a rare and complex congenital heart disease.

According to a release issued by the hospital, the child had been battling severe medical challenges since birth. Conditions included a poorly developed left lung and persistently low oxygen levels. He had previously undergone four major cardiac surgeries and stenting procedures in Georgia.

The Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunt surgery performed previously on his right lung was providing only minimal blood flow, resulting in progressive deterioration of his oxygen saturation. When the family approached Medstar Hospitals, a team of doctors conducted an evaluation and explored possible treatment strategies before formulating a customised surgical plan.

Under the leadership of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) team, the doctors performed a Right Ventricle to Pulmonary Artery (RV-PA) reconstruction using a prosthetic graft. The surgery was successful, and the patient demonstrated gradual but significant recovery, with improvement in oxygen levels, the release said.
