Tension prevailed at the Visakhapatnam Collectorate on Monday when the members of the Fishing Harbour Workers’ Union took out a rally, alleging irregularities in the disbursal of the Matsyakarula Sevalo fund to eligible fisherfolk.

The rally began from the Gandhi statue at Peda Jalaripeta and proceeded to the Collectorate, with protesters raising slogans against the alleged denial of financial assistance to several fishermen. Tension prevailed for some time after the police reportedly objected to allowing the protesters into the Collectorate premises. Agitated demonstrators attempted to push through the gates, leading to a brief scuffle.

Following discussions with the police, a delegation of 10 union representatives was permitted to meet Joint Collector G. Vidyadhari. According to union leaders, the official responded positively and assured them that the issue would be brought to the notice of the government and that a response would be conveyed by Friday.

Addressing the protesters, union leaders P. Chandrasekhar and Vanka Gurumurthy stated the agitation would be intensified if the government failed to provide a favourable response.

Andhra Pradesh Matsya Karmika Sangham State president Neyyala Nagabhushana Rao, and several union leaders participated in the protest.
