
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday (May 23, 2026) landed in New Delhi to attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ summit and will also be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier, Mr. Rubio on Saturday (May 23, 2026) began his maiden four day visit to India by visiting Mother House, the headquarters of Saint Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, in Kolkata.
Mr. Rubio arrived in Kolkata this morning, and went to Mother House in central Kolkata. Secretary Rubio was welcomed by the sisters of Missionaries of Charity where he spent about an hour. After visiting Mother House. Mr. Rubio visited Nirmala Sishu Bhawan, an orphanage run by Missionaries of Charity. After the visit to the Missionaries of Charity, Mr. Rubio visited Victoria Memorial in the city. Security was stepped up at Mother House and Victoria Memorial for the high profile visit.
Mr. Rubio’s India itinerary, scheduled from May 23 to 26 and also encompassing Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, is being viewed as diplomatically significant for his scheduled energy talks with India and the meeting with Ministers from the Quad nations.
The visit will be closely watched as it comes against the backdrop of the U.S.’s continued engagement in hostilities in the Persian Gulf region, which have had consequences for India’s energy security. Responding to a question about India being affected by high energy prices due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Mr. Rubio described India as a “great partner” and said he was looking forward to meeting with Ministers from the Quad nations.
