A 19-year-old man from Karadikulam near Kalugumalai succumbed to stab injuries, after he was allegedly attacked by his girlfriend’s relative at the new bus stand in Kovilpatti late on Sunday (May 17, 2026).
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as M. Sanjay, who was reportedly in a relationship with a 19-year-old woman from Ketchilapuram in Thoothukudi district. Both belonged to a Scheduled Caste community.
The woman’s family was opposed to their relationship, and she was sent to stay at her uncle’s (father’s brother) house at Subramaniyapuram in Kovilpatti. She learnt that Sanjay was leaving for Chennai, and she informed her family about it. It is reported that her uncle then told her that they would speak to him, but that he should be willing to marry her immediately.
On Sunday night, the woman’s father K. Kumar, 44, her uncle K. Marimuthu, 40, and his friend R. Sankaranarayanan, 51, and herself went to the bus stand to meet Sanjay.
During the conversation, an altercation broke out between the parties, during which Marimuthu stabbed Sanjay with a knife, inflicting injuries on the neck and other parts of his body. In the ensuing scuffle, Marimuthu also sustained cut injuries.
Upon receiving information, the police rushed to spot, rescued Sanjay, and sent him for treatment to the government hospital in Kovilpatti. He was later referred to Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital for further treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries early Monday.
The Kovilpatti West police registered a case and arrested Kumar, Marimuthu, and Sankaranarayanan. Further investigation is under way.
