Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Monday his intention to nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in brokering the historic ceasefire and hostage agreement between Hamas and Israel.
The nomination would mark the second time in a matter of months that Islamabad tapped the U.S. president for the prestigious award. In June, the country nominated Trump for his role in securing a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.
“Pakistan had nominated President Donald Trump for Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding, extraordinary contributions to, first, stop the war between India and Pakistan and then achieve a ceasefire, along with his very wonderful team,” said Sharif, speaking next to Trump, in remarks in Egypt’s coastal resort area of Sharm el-Sheikh, where world leaders gathered to sign documents related to the peace deal in Gaza.
“And, today, again, I would like to nominate this great president for Nobel Peace Prize,” Sharif continued, gesturing to him, “because I genuinely feel that he is the most genuine and most wonderful candidate for the Peace Prize because he has brought not only peace in South Asia, saved millions of people, their lives. And today, here in Sharm el-Sheikh, achieving peace in Gaza is saving millions of lives in the Middle East.”
Trump introduced numerous world leaders in attendance for the signing ceremony in Egypt, including Sharif, who heaped praise on the U.S. president after Trump invited him to “share what you said to me the other day,” adding, “It was so nice.”
“Today is one of the greatest days in contemporary history because peace has been achieved after untiring efforts — efforts led by President Trump, who is genuinely a man of peace, who has relentlessly and untiringly worked throughout these months, day in and day out, to make this world a place to live with peace and prosperity,” Sharif said, after Trump yielded the microphone to him.
After announcing his intention to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, Sharif turned to the president and made a brief saluting gesture toward him.
“Mr. President, I would like to salute you for your exemplary leadership, visionary leadership. And I think that you are the man this world needed most at this point in time. The world will always remember you as a man who did everything, went out of the way to stop seven and, today, eight wars,” Sharif added.
While introducing world leaders, Trump appeared to chide Norway after the Nobel Committee did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize last week.
“Oh, Norway, aye yay yay,” Trump said. “Norway. What happened, Norway? What happened?”
The Nobel Committee last week awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado after numerous Trump allies had stumped for him to receive the honor.
Israeli leaders and others said on Monday they would nominate him for 2026 for his role in the Gaza peace deal, which is still in its early stages. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) last Wednesday formally nominated Trump for the prize for his role in securing the Gaza ceasefire deal.
